Chapter Nineteen – Luna

“I can’t wait to show you Cairnnor.” Egan held up a picnic basket as she came down the stairs, her hair tied back from her face even though it was doubtful it would stay that way once they were airborne.

“And I can’t wait to see it.” She stifled a yawn and wished she felt as bright-eyed and bushy-tailed as Egan looked. Maybe his enthusiasm would rub off on her or she would absorb some of his energy. Failing that, she’d need caffeine. Lots of caffeine.

“Late night?” Jacintha came out of the kitchen with a coffee cup in her hand.

“I couldn’t sleep,” she admitted. “Everything was going around and around in my head. Then, when I closed my eyes, I kept imagining I was falling.”

“I’d never let you fall,” Egan assured her.

“I know.” She went to him and kissed his cheek. “I don’t think the dream was about you. I think it was my head trying to sort my thoughts into some kind of order.”

“Pieces of the puzzle.” Egan slipped his arm around her shoulders and guided her toward the kitchen. “Coffee and pancakes. Mom made them.”

“Did she make the picnic, too?” Luna asked.

He gave a sheepish smile. “I have not mastered cooking. I’ve never really needed to since I’ve lived at home with my mom my whole life.”

“A momma’s boy.” She patted his cheek. “Very sweet.”

“I’ll learn. I promise.” He grabbed a plate from the counter and set it down in front of her.

“Well, one of us will have to learn to cook.” She leaned forward and inhaled the scent of warm pancakes and sweet syrup.

“You can’t cook either?” He didn’t attempt to cover his surprise.

“Oh, I’m sorry! Just because I’m a woman does not mean I can cook. It’s not an app that’s installed at birth!” She picked up a fork and ate a mouthful of the pancakes. “But life would be so much easier if it was. These are so good.”

“Now you know why I never bothered to learn to cook.” He sat down beside her and lowered his voice. “My mom is quite old-fashioned. She cooks and cleans, and I do the handiwork.”

“Snap. My mom cooks and cleans, well, I help with the cleaning, and I do the handiwork.” She chuckled as he cocked his head to one side. “I’m not joking.”

“We’re doomed then?” Egan asked lightly.

“Doomed to order takeout for the rest of our lives.” She washed the pancakes down with coffee.

“Or we could eat out at Ivan’s restaurant every night. Maybe he’ll give his dragon shifter rates.” His eyes sparkled, and there was a hint of an amber glow as he got up and refilled her coffee cup. “Feeling better?”

“A little.” She forked up the last of the pancakes and relaxed in her chair. “Where are you taking me today?”

“I thought we’d fly over the mountains and have our picnic. There’s this waterfall I’d like to show you. Then we could...” He leaned in close. “Make love in a valley filled with mountain flowers.
